Born and raised in Beirut, Yasmina Sabbah has been singing in choirs since the age of 7. Her early passion for music led her to pursue lessons in Piano, Flute and, later on, voice. In tandem with her undergraduate studies in Graphic Design, she started directing her first children’s choir at Lycée Abdel-Kader at the age of 19, paving the way for her to found the school’s music program. Her love for art and music culminated in the writing of her final year thesis “Building an Aural Image for Music,” a study aimed at finding and establishing a visual and kinesthetic method as an effective solution to teaching children sight singing. This study was followed by an applied project that consisted of creating a fun game as a pedagogical and visual tool, to facilitate sight singing.
After completing her Masters of Music in Choral Studies from the University of Cambridge in 2013, Yasmina Sabbah currently leads five different choirs ranging from children to adults. In parallel to her conducting carrier, she sings in several ensembles such as the AUB Choir, and Beirut Vocal Point. She has also appeared as the soprano soloist in several AUB Choir concerts such as Vivaldi’s Magnificat, Faure’s Requiem, Bach’s Cantata 140 and many others.
Yasmina Sabbah has received several awards such as the Patron’s Award in ChoirFest Dubai (2015), Philippe Jaber Merit Award (2012), the Rosemary Salhaney Haggar Choral Award (2010), and the Choral Leadership Award (2009).
Her aim is to earn a Ph. D and contribute to spreading choral music in Lebanon and the region as well as improving music education in schools and universities.
